For years, crocheting has been considered as an old-fashioned activity which is generally made by women in their older ages. However, especially in the last ten years, it has become not only a much more popular hobby but also a big sector with various stakeholders. The pandemic has also contributed to its fast and unexpected growth in this way. Today, it both constitutes an important source of income for women and men and completes the iconic products of famous brands.

Many people prefer making crochet due to its calming and relaxing effects. An international study called “Happy Hookers” and carried out by the University of Wollongong Australia suggests that crochet offers positive benefits for personal well-being with many respondents actively using crochet to manage mental health conditions and life events such as grief, chronic illness, and pain. According to this study, crochet can play a role in promoting positive well-being in the general population, adding to the social prescribing evidence base. (Burns, P. & Van Der Meer, R. (2020)) Additionally, during the pandemic, crocheting has allowed people to spend their free time, create something and show their stuff without going outside and without the need for any face-to-face communication via online platforms.

As a result of such a rising trend in crochet, it has started to be used in the design and production of many products in clothing, accessories, and decoration. Fashion brands like Zara, Mango, etc. included crochet bags and crochet embroidered tops in their collections. While some people prefer buying ready-made ones, others buy yarns and make their own accessories like bags, scarves and mittens, blankets.

Instagram, Pinterest, and Youtube are the main sources of crochet learning, inspiration and communication for the crocheters and the total beginners. For the people who want to try and make their own crochets, a vast quantity of informative videos and articles are available. Also, they can easily buy their materials such as yarns, hooks, scissors, etc. from many stores and various online platforms as well.

Growing day by day, crocheting will keep its place besides knitting, and the yarn sector will become larger with the increasing number of producers like the Wool and the Gang, Lion Brand, Nako, Ören Bayan, La Mia, Kartopu, Yarnart, Yarnspirations, Two of Wands, Hobbii Yarns, We Are Knitters and so on.

A piece of advice: No harm in trying:))
